Training under load can take many forms.
You might walk with a weighted vest.
Ruck with a backpack.
Carry weight over a familiar route.
Increase your distance.
Increase your load.
Or try to complete the same activity more efficiently over time.
The movements may look different, but they all share the same basic variables:
Load.
Distance.
Time.
Weightpace gives those variables a simple structure.
Weightpace measures how much external load you move over distance.
Weightpace Rate measures how quickly you produce that Weightpace.
Together, they give you a way to set targets, record completed movement, and measure progress over time.

Start With a Weightpace Target

Weightpace is calculated by multiplying external load by distance.
Weightpace = Load × Distance
For example:
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
That means carrying 20 pounds for four miles produces 80 Weightpace.
Instead of thinking only in terms of distance, you can also think in terms of the total Weightpace you want to complete.
Suppose your target is:
80 WP
There are many ways to reach it.
10 lb × 8 mi = 80 WP
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
25 lb × 3.2 mi = 80 WP
40 lb × 2 mi = 80 WP
Each activity produces the same total Weightpace.
But that does not mean each activity is physically identical.
Heavier loads, longer distances, terrain, elevation, speed, load placement, weather, and individual ability can all change the experience and physiological demand.
Weightpace does not attempt to make those activities identical.
It measures one specific thing:
How much external load was moved across how much distance.

Choose Your Load and Distance

Weightpace is a measurement system.
It is not a recommendation for how much weight you should carry.
You choose the load and distance appropriate for your experience, ability, goals, and training plan.
Once those variables are chosen, Weightpace gives you a consistent way to measure what you completed.
For example:
15 lb × 3 mi = 45 WP
20 lb × 3 mi = 60 WP
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
The calculation does not tell you which activity you should perform.
It tells you what each completed activity represents in Weightpace.
That distinction matters.
Progress under load does not always require carrying more weight.
You can increase Weightpace by increasing load.
You can increase Weightpace by increasing distance.
Or you can keep the same Weightpace and improve how quickly you complete it.

Complete the Activity

Once you have chosen your load and distance, complete the movement.
Imagine you carry 20 pounds for four miles.
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
You have completed:
80 WP
That gives the activity a measurable total beyond distance alone.
Traditional activity tracking might record:
4 miles
Weightpace adds another piece of information:
4 miles
20 lb external load
= 80 WP
The distance tells you how far you traveled.
The Weightpace tells you how much loaded movement you completed.

Add Time to Measure Performance

Weightpace tells you the total.
Weightpace Rate adds performance.
Weightpace Rate = Weightpace ÷ Time
Suppose you complete:
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
And the activity takes:
1 hour 20 minutes
That is approximately 1.33 hours.
80 WP ÷ 1.33 hr ≈ 60 WP/hr
Your activity now has two primary Weightpace measurements:
80 WP
60 WP/hr
One defines the total loaded movement completed.
The other defines how quickly it was produced.
Weightpace defines the goal. Weightpace Rate defines the performance.

Repeat and Compare

One of the most useful ways to train with Weightpace is to repeat a comparable activity and track what changes.
Consider the same loaded route completed at two different times.

First Attempt

Load: 20 lb
Distance: 4 mi
Time: 80 min
Weightpace: 80 WP
WP Rate: 60 WP/hr

Second Attempt

Load: 20 lb
Distance: 4 mi
Time: 64 min
Weightpace: 80 WP
WP Rate: 75 WP/hr
The Weightpace did not change.
The performance did.
The same amount of external load was moved across the same distance in less time.
WP Rate increased from:
60 WP/hr
to
75 WP/hr
That gives you a simple way to measure improvement without changing the total Weightpace.

Three Ways to Progress

Weightpace creates several ways to measure progress.
You do not have to make every activity heavier.
And you do not have to make every activity longer.

1. Increase Distance

Keep the same load and move farther.
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
20 lb × 5 mi = 100 WP
The load stays the same.
The total Weightpace increases.

2. Increase Load

Keep the same distance and carry more external weight.
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
25 lb × 4 mi = 100 WP
The distance stays the same.
The total Weightpace increases.

3. Improve WP Rate

Keep the same load and distance, but complete the activity in less time.
20 lb × 4 mi = 80 WP
80 WP in 80 minutes ≈ 60 WP/hr
80 WP in 64 minutes = 75 WP/hr
The Weightpace stays the same.
The WP Rate improves.
These are different forms of progress.

Try a 50 WP Target

A simple way to understand Weightpace is to choose a round target and see how different load-and-distance combinations can produce it.
Consider:
50 WP
There are many mathematical ways to reach that total.
10 lb × 5 mi = 50 WP
20 lb × 2.5 mi = 50 WP
25 lb × 2 mi = 50 WP
40 lb × 1.25 mi = 50 WP
Each combination produces the same Weightpace total.
But equivalent Weightpace does not mean equivalent physiological demand.
Carrying 40 pounds for 1.25 miles may create a very different experience from carrying 10 pounds for five miles.
Weightpace does not erase those differences.
It gives both activities a common measurement for the amount of external load moved over distance.
The load and distance you choose remain your decision.
