Traditional walking and running metrics tell us how far we traveled and how long it took. They do not account for the external weight carried along the way.
Walking one mile without added weight is not the same as walking one mile while carrying 20, 30, or 40 pounds.
Weightpace introduces two connected metrics for measuring movement under load:
Weightpace measures the total amount of external load moved over distance.
Weightpace Rate measures how quickly that Weightpace is produced.
One measures what you completed. The other shows how you performed.

What is Weightpace?

Weightpace is calculated by multiplying external load by distance.
Weightpace (WP) = Load × Distance
Carry 1 pound of external load for 1 mile, and you earn 1 Weightpace.
For example:
20 lb × 3 miles = 60 WP
Anyone who carries the same external load over the same distance earns the same amount of Weightpace, regardless of how long it takes.
Weightpace answers a simple question:
How much movement under load did you complete?
Because it is based only on load and distance, Weightpace can be used consistently across activities, athletes, programs, and events. It can be accumulated over a single activity, a training program, an event, or a lifetime.

Weightpace is the universal metric

Weightpace provides a simple and consistent way to measure movement under load.
A person could earn 100 Weightpace through different combinations of load and distance:

Each combination produces the same total Weightpace. The experience may be different, but the amount of external load moved over distance is equivalent within the Weightpace metric.
This makes Weightpace useful for activity totals, daily goals, training programs, events, personal milestones, community challenges, and lifetime accumulation.

What is Weightpace Rate?

Weightpace Rate adds time to the equation.
It measures how much Weightpace is produced over a specific period.
Weightpace Rate = Weightpace ÷ Time
Because Weightpace equals load multiplied by distance, Weightpace Rate can also be expressed as:
Weightpace Rate = Load × Speed
Weightpace Rate is typically measured in Weightpace per hour, or WP/hr.
For example, carrying 20 pounds for 3 miles produces 60 Weightpace.
Complete that movement in one hour:
60 WP ÷ 1 hour = 60 WP/hr
Complete the same movement in 45 minutes:
60 WP ÷ 0.75 hours = 80 WP/hr
The total Weightpace remains the same. The second effort simply produces it at a higher rate.

How is Weightpace Rate different from regular pace?

Traditional pace measures the time required to cover a unit of distance.
For walking and running, it is usually shown in minutes per mile.
Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Traditional pace shows how quickly someone is moving, but it does not account for external load.
Someone walking one mile in 15 minutes without added weight and someone walking one mile in 15 minutes while carrying 40 pounds have the same traditional pace.
Their loaded output is not the same.
Weightpace Rate accounts for both movement speed and the external load being carried.

The first two efforts have the same traditional pace because both cover two miles in 40 minutes.
However, the second effort produces twice as much Weightpace and twice the Weightpace Rate because twice as much external load is being carried.
The third effort produces the same total Weightpace as the second effort, but at a higher rate because it is completed in less time.
Each metric tells us something different:
Distance tells us how far someone traveled.
Pace tells us how quickly they traveled.
Weightpace tells us how much loaded movement they completed.
Weightpace Rate tells us how quickly they produced that loaded movement.

The running analogy

A useful way to understand Weightpace and Weightpace Rate is to compare them with distance and pace in a running event.
A 5K defines the distance a runner must complete. Pace shows how quickly the runner covers that distance.
Weightpace works in a similar way.
A 500 WP target defines the amount of loaded movement to complete. Weightpace Rate shows how quickly that Weightpace is produced.

The comparison is not exact. A 5K requires everyone to cover the same distance, while a Weightpace target may be completed through different combinations of load and distance.
Weightpace defines the goal. Weightpace Rate defines the performance.

Tracking personal improvement

Weightpace Rate can show how your ability to move under load changes over time.
You may improve your rate by:
  • Moving faster with the same load

  • Carrying more load at the same speed

  • Producing the same Weightpace in less time

  • Maintaining your rate over a longer distance

  • Increasing your sustainable loaded output

For example, imagine completing the same two-mile route several weeks apart:

The total Weightpace remains the same, but the Weightpace Rate increased from 60 WP/hr to 75 WP/hr.
This shows that the same loaded movement was completed more quickly.
Weightpace is what you earn. Weightpace Rate is how you improve.

Is a higher Weightpace Rate always better?

A higher rate represents greater loaded movement output over time, but it does not necessarily mean that one activity is universally better or more difficult than another.
For example:

Both activities produce a Weightpace Rate of 60 WP/hr.
However, carrying 10 pounds at a faster speed may feel very different from carrying 30 pounds at a slower speed. Each activity may train different physical qualities and create a different experience.
Weightpace Rate does not attempt to measure every factor involved in an activity.
It does not directly account for:
  • Terrain and elevation

  • Weather

  • Heart rate and perceived effort

  • Individual physical ability

  • How the load is carried

Traditional running pace does not account for every condition either. A ten-minute mile on flat pavement is different from a ten-minute mile on a steep trail, but pace remains useful because it measures one thing clearly.
Weightpace Rate works the same way.
It measures the rate at which external load is moved over distance.
It should not be interpreted as a complete measurement of physical effort, calorie expenditure, or overall fitness.
